My Family Legacy: Honouring South Asian service in the world wars

My family legacy: Honouring South Asian service in the world wars is a new campaign to honour the millions of men and women from modern-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal who fought for Britain in the world wars.

It also aims to tell the story of how past generations’ military service led families to move to the UK and become part of today’s multi-ethnic Britain.

We’re asking South Asian families to share their stories and pictures of family members who served in the world wars. These will be displayed on a dedicated new website and also form part of the Royal British Legion’s new ‘Forgotten Army’ exhibition as it travels to venues around the country raising awareness of the South Asian contribution to the world wars.

My Family Legacy is coordinated by the charity British Future and Eastern Eye, Britain’s biggest Asian newspaper. It is supported by the Royal British Legion. As well as raising awareness of the huge contribution made by South Asian servicemen and women, it hopes to make new connections between our history and the society we share today.

To take part, simply fill in the form on this website and share a picture of your relative and a few details: their name, rank, where they served and anything more about their story. And if you’d like, tell us the story of your family’s journey to life in the UK and whether your ancestor’s military service played a part.

Over the next 12 months we’ll be collecting stories and raising awareness of the contribution of these forgotten armies. We hope you’ll take part and help honour their service in the way it deserves.
